Redwood Timber and Poles
Wood is the perfect material to cut, shape and fabricate; it comes in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Its workability, variety and natural appearance makes it the ideal choice for outdoor construction. The main species of wood commonly used for outdoor structures are: Cedar, Cypress and Redwood. Cedar tends to split very easily and Cypress is in limited supply and difficult to locate. At the African Thatch Company we manufacture all our structures using premium grade Redwood timber.
Unmatched for its beauty, Redwood is naturally resistant to weathering, cupping, and insect damage. Redwood timber is a more durable, slower grown and stable wood. It has excellent strength and does not warp or shrink like other timber species. Redwood has a beautiful straight grain, consists of an open celled structure and contains little or no pitch or resins.
The only disadvantage with Redwood timber is that it is expensive. However in order to make a quality long lasting outdoor structure, quality timber is required in its construction. Outdoor structures made with Redwood timbers retain their appearance ten, fifteen and twenty years after construction. Redwood has many advantages over other types of timber and is often used in the interior of homes and restaurants because of its natural beauty.
Redwood Timber Poles:
The Redwood timber poles are all quarter sawn heart removed. This means they do they do not possess the dead heart knot found in the centre of the pole. Our Redwood timber poles are guaranteed against major splitting and splintering and satisfy the latest European specifications with respect to splitting and splintering. Although we cannot guarantee against very minor splitting, the use of Redwood timber poles greatly reduces the problems of any major cracking. To give you some idea, we have supplied over 30,000 Redwood quarter sawn poles since our inception and have had to replace three poles due to a splitting issue.
Decay & Insect Treatment:
Naturally untreated Redwood has an in grown resistance to wood decay and insect infestation. To ensure that our Redwood timber products remain looking perfect for many years to come, all timbers and poles are protected from wood decay, attack by wood boring insects and fungal infestation. All the Redwood timbers and poles are pressure treated with Tanalith E wood preservative. Tanalith E is applied in sealed vacuum vessels, which forces the preservative deep into the structure of the wood. Tanalith E has proven to be the most effective wood treatment preservative available in the UK today.
The natural colour of Redwood is (surprisingly!) a reddish brown colour. Left untreated Redwood will eventually fade to a silver grey colour after long term exposure to the sun. No other wood can hold paints, stains and other coatings better than Redwood. To further enhance the Look of our timber structures we additionally coat all Redwood timbers and poles in a Cuprinol `Golden Brown` wood treatment preservative.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified:
All timbers and poles supplied are FSC certified which shows that the timber has been sourced from responsibly managed forests independently certified in accordance with the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
